Picked up a new engine for a kart I'm building. The current outer clutch basket is an after-market billet aluminum. In reading over the current rules "The clutch inner and outer basket and pressure plate must be OE. Lightening of the clutch assembly by machining or grinding is allowed. Spring, discs and plates may be after market parts."
In talking to a couple of engine builders, they see no performance gain by using the after-market clutch basket. In fact, they believe it would be more durable if anything. This was a SKUSA run motor. I understand the rule, but in current economic conditions, I would prefer not to replace a perfectly good basket that really gives no performance gains with a stock one that I could modify.
Does anyone see a reason that this rule can be changed? I also wonder how many other drivers have purchased a motor from kart racing and don't even know they have this type of basket.
Any thoughts...
