We autocrossed in Boise, Id. this weekend. The first day the morn temp was 40 warming to 65 in the aft. The car worked very well, I only had to soften the rear shocks two clicks because of a little wheel spin on excelleration.

We finished 8th overall fastest time out of 93 drivers and 9th in Pacs.

The 2nd Day morn temp was 20 deg and aft only got to 35. We couldn't even roll the throttle on without wheel spin and had severe oversteer on high speed turns and slight understeer on slower turns ( maybe driver error).

I softened the shocks 4 clicks frt & Rear. lowered air press frt & rear 2 lbs and then tried raising tire press 2lbs from our starting pressures. I only managed to eliminate the understeer at slow turns ( maybe driver adjustment). Tried traction control on but settled on Comp mode with a smoooooth steering and throttle imput. Ran the whole course in 2nd gear.
All Corvettes and high hp cars were having problems with rear whl traction, but we were the worst!!

We have a 04 ZO6 w/Phaft shocks and SS Sway bar. If I would of had the time I would of filled the fuel tank all the way, we were running 1/2 t0 1/3 tank.

We dropped to 35 in overall time and worse in pacs. Of course the all whl dr cars did well and also the low hp stockers.

What should I of done? even more air press?, even Less air press?

Was running 295 710"s frt with 32psi and 315 710"s with 28psi The car has comp alignment and cross weighted

Any sugestions?

Thanks

Well, my first suggestion is move to where it is warmer.

But from what little I know, the lack of traction you had was the result of the tire rubber. It would appear that the compound you have just does not work until at least a little bit warm. Perhaps deliberate spinning of the rears and sliding of the fronts would have gotten enough heat into them but I doubt it.

The adjustments to make would be the same as you would in the rain.

Can't  spin tires in staging line. for rain I usually raise air press about 4lbs per tire. Don't know if drivers on Hooisers were having a smuch trouble as the Kumho's

Possibly raising the tire pressure in cold conditions might reduce the contact patch area and hence increase the heat in that area. But given that I compete in rally, I am only guessing. However, I did manage to complete the last two years' 100 Acre Wood rallies. 2007 was on 3 inches of ice and 2008 was in 8 inches of snow. Not bad for a guy from Texas where we think ice goes in tea or whiskey. But I do know the temperature range of specialized tires, whether race or rally, can be rather narrow either hot or cold.

710's in freezing weather is just a bad idea.  They just won't work, there's just nothing you can really do.  I would have put street tires on.  Hopefully they didn't freeze...that might affect them for the remainder of their life.

The tires were only used once last season but they spend the winter in my car hauler outside . Our winter temps drop down into the -20 deg so the tires have always been subjected to freezing temps.

I re-read the "Care and Feeding" of an R compound tire articles on Tire Rack's website, and can't seem to find it, but I had learned somewhere that freezing = bad.  It changes the compound at the molecular level permanently.  Much like heat cycling does...breaking the molecular bonds and then having them re-attach.  Most people use their R-comps as coffee tables or something through the Winter, *never* letting them freeze.  I personally have seen Kuhmo's crack because they had been frozen.
